I run the video output to my TV with HDMI from the mini port. So as of 1/10/22 it was a fully updated, pretty vanilla install with just PiHole running and an install of Home Assistant in a Docker container which I hadn't really messed much with to be honest.I ran a casual sudo apt update & sudo apt full-upgrade.I'm running the Raspberry Pi OS Full 64bit Desktop version with Debian Bullseye (I referenced this guide from Ian which below is just how it went for me.) The above does not cover the financial side of development - Linux steam is still just under 1.2% of their market so as a business where would you put your money? (Oh yes - developing our own hardware running a version of Linux so why would we compete with ourselves and hurry to fix things not on our platform) It's worth keeping an eye on and to see what is happening but you will be pushed to find a mention of the Pi in their stats but for general news try
X11 is very very complex and has a long long history (early 80's) and so embedded in critical servers that CANNOT be broken for a few games - so yes it can be that hard - spend a little time looking at the code base and trying to reproduce a few reported bugs if you would like to see a bit more about OS development.
Just use two SD cards / SSDs - one with all the new stuff on it and one for games. It's no real difference than the video card not running under then next version of Windows after you bought it - the difference with Linux is that you can dive in and offer to help code / test it - try that with Apple or Microsoft! I'm a lot happier with the later for 99% of my tasks and keep new away from life till tested (I'm scared of my wife complaining the computers / internet / printers are not working - she has cold feet in bed and cooks a lot better than me).
Over the years I have gotten to understand there is bleeding edge, leading edge and then it mainly works. Is there anything specific you must have in Bullseye? If not just use the legacy version of the OS as security updates will be provided. To make it worse the stream link software uses the hardware acceleration on the Pi and it's all a bit of a mess in Bullseye. X11 is so embedded in Linux for the display server replacing it is a very very major task (read up on Wayland for one historic view). The best thing?
